Article 31 - Every child has the right to play in a wide range of activities

Intent

At Poplar Farm School we offer a broad and balanced curriculum to all children, irrespective of age, gender, SEN, disability or abilities. Our curriculum gives children opportunities for participation, enjoyment and success whilst developing their confidence, independence, and resilience. We aim to teach children the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle, whilst promoting personal, social, intellectual and spiritual physical development. PE at Poplar Farm School can also provide opportunities for cross-curricular opportunities for children to develop key skills of communication, application of number, ICT, team work and problem solving. 

Implementation

The teaching of PE is designated to 2 x 60 minutes of curriculum time per week for Years 1-6. Reception have 1 PE session alongside other opportunities to outdoor play in line with the EYFS Early Learning goals and targets.

Our PE lessons are planned using the Get Set 4 PE platform, which aligns with our core values, our whole child approach and the National Curriculum objectives. Progression is a key aspect of the scheme which ensures our children are increasingly challenged as they move up through the school.

All pupils should have the opportunity to develop their fundamental movement skills and core principles through non-competitive and competitive situations:

  • Locomotion Skills - walking, running, dodging, jumping, hopping and skipping.
  • Stability Skills – landing, balance, rotation: twist, turn, roll and spin.
  • Manipulation Skills - throwing and catching, striking with feet, striking with hands, striking with an implement.

This will be delivered within the following contexts:

  •  Outwitting Opponents, i.e. Games
  •  Problem Solving, i.e. Outdoor Education
  •  Movements Replication, i.e. Swimming & Gym
  •  Performing at Maximal Levels, i.e. Athletics
  •  Exploring and Communicating Ideas, Concepts and Emotions, i.e. Dance
  •  Exercising Safely and Effectively

Besides PE lessons, Poplar Farm offer a range of extra-curricular activities such as dance, gymnastics and multi-skills.

Impact

At Poplar Farm School we ensure the children understand the significance of physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. We provide opportunities for children of all abilities to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding in each activity area.

In addition to this, we measure the impact of our curriculum through:

Monitoring and Evaluation:

  • All pupils’ progress is assessed in the children’s work in PE, both by making informal judgements, as they observe them during lessons, and through assessing against the specific objectives set out in the National Curriculum and recorded using the Get Set 4 PE assessment software. These resources include the Get Set 4 PE progression of skills document, progression ladders and knowledge organisers.
  • Pupils are assessed at the end of the Foundation Stage as part of their profile and at the end of every year using the Get Set for PE assessment grids
  • Pupils are involved in self and peer assessment whenever appropriate.
  • Assessment informs planning for progress of skills (short-term planning).
  • Pupil achievement and progress in PE is reported to relevant staff.
  • The school keeps a sample of pupil achievement such as photographs, records of athletics/swimming awards, links with cross-curricular topics.
  • The school uses social media to share pupil achievement to parents and carers.

Assessment/Recording

The coordinator will:

• Empower colleagues to teach PE to a high standard and support the staff where necessary with any further support or CPD.

• Monitor the way PE is taught throughout school; observing, discussing and through questionnaires.

• Examine long term and medium term plans and advise on appropriate teaching strategies, with the expertise and responsibility for monitoring standards.

 

 

 

Playground Leaders

Our Playground Leaders work with their peers to support and promote a more physically active play time.     

Our Playground Leaders have had training to support children during play to:

- Organise a range of fun activities.

- Support younger children during play.

- Promote physically active play times.

 

This leadership opportunity enables our pupils to develop and embed aspects of our Poplar Promise:

Positive and independent: be able to act responsibly – collect equipment, set up                 activities, encourage sensible play, put equipment away.

Open minded and curious: plan, prepare and develop fun activities

Problem solvers: guide and support children during difficulties in play.

Resilience: working as a team in a multitude of situations, weather and age ranges.
